President of the Basque Country Iñigo Urkullu, accompanied by the Minister for Equality, Justice and Social Policies, Beatriz Artolazabal, welcomed the Commissioner General of the United Nations Agency for the Palestine refugee population in the Middle East-UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini. The meeting took place this morning at the Presidency of the Government.
During the meeting, the UNRWA Commissioner General highlighted the extreme challenges facing Palestine refugees caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the impoverishment of this population exacerbated by decades of blockade, violence, displacement and violations of basic rights.

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to more than 5 million refugees from Palestine. Its mission is to help Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to reach their full potential for human development, awaiting a fair and final solution to their plight. UNRWA services include education, health care, relief and social services, infrastructure and camp improvement, protection and microfinance.
