Information Society

Given the enormous changes taking place in the world as a result of the globalisation process and the need to adapt to new challenges, the Basque Government decided to create the Basque Country in the Information Society Plan, in keeping with a strategy intended to adapt Basque society to the digital era, foster cultural change and place new technologies at the service of citizens with the object of improving their standard of living, increasing social balance and strengthening the value of the economy.

To meet its objective, the Plan places harmonious, balanced emphasis on the development of action making it possible to use and generate contents and services contributing value to the network. The Basque Government has therefore launched a variety of citizen-oriented programs, such as the subsidised Internet access initiative, Konekta Zaitez.

The Basque Country is  the home of CIFAL BILBAO, the International Training Centre for Local Authorities, created in cooperation with UNITAR - the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, technical secretariat of IT4ALL – the Local Authority Network for the Information Society – which held its World Summit in Geneva 2003. The mission of this world institution is to achieve and define a common position between local authorities throughout the world with respect to the Information Society.
